Today, we remember Laurens Police Department Patrolman Hosea Ocala Martin, South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper I David Hunter O’Brien, and Richland County Sheriff’s Department Deputy First Class Darral Keith Lane.

On this date in 1921, Patrolman Hosea Martin was shot and killed while attempting to arrest two men who were transporting illegal alcohol.

On this date in 1991, Trooper O’Brien died from injuries he sustained in an on-duty automobile accident nine days earlier. Trooper O’Brien suffered severe leg damage when he lost control of his patrol car and veered into the path of a truck.

On this date in 2007, Deputy First Class Darral Lane suffered a fatal heart attack following a vehicle pursuit and apprehension of two suspects in a suspicious vehicle at about 5:30 am.

Congratulations to Jason Bruder on his appointment as Chief of Police. Strong leadership and experience matter in campus policing, and this role carries real responsibility for safety and accountability.

Today, we remember Mount Pleasant Police Department Patrol Officer Vaughn Edward Kee and Saluda Police Department Sergeant Calvin Aldred “Tommy” Perry.

On this date in 1985, Patrol Officer Vaughn Kee was struck and killed by a drunk driver. He had stopped a drunk driver at 2:35 a.m. on Ben Sawyer Boulevard. After placing the driver in the back of his patrol vehicle, he was walking around the car when a second drunk driver approached from the rear, sideswiped the police car, and hit Patrol Officer Kee.

On this date in 1995, Sergeant Perry died one week after suffering a heart attack following a high-speed pursuit.
